Stocco“Your everyday actions give life to our design”: this is the Mission of Stocco. To design furnishings for your everyday life means not only making something useful for your daily activities but also making it safe, homologated, certified. This is why all our furniture and washbasins undergo the strictest testing, in which the typical daily actions are repeated hundreds of times. Stocco makes use of an internal protocol regarding the quality system. The protocol is extremely strict and defines all the procedures, tests and trials necessary so that each product and every component of our products meets the quality standards required by the market. For the certification and guarantee of our tests, we rely on an independent external laboratory called CATAS, which was established to stimulate the technological development of Italian industries manufacturing wood-based products, furniture and furnishings, and related product sectors, and is currently the most important Italian research and development institute and testing laboratory for the furniture and wood-based products sector.
The tests that Stocco requests from CATAS (Italian certifying institute for the furniture and woodbased products sector) are of various types and regard both the safety aspects (such as the resistance of the fasteners of the furniture, under full load, the resistance of hinges, drawer guides, shelf brackets; the resistance of the gluing of the mirror to the aluminium frame), and the aesthetics of the furniture, including for instance inspections for testing the paint consistency in terms of thickness, scratch resistance, colour variation with the passing of time, rust resistance of the chrome-plated parts, rust resistance of the mirrors, and corrosion resistance of the painted metal parts.
The tests conducted fall into four large groups: tests that certify the quality of the product we sell, comparative tests between various components, safety tests on the chrome and lacquered parts, cyclical tests to verify that the quality recognised by the market is consistently maintained. Among the tests that we carry out, there are resistance tests on doors, drawers and wall units, veneered edges and the structures that make up the piece of furniture. The drawers are opened and closed using special machines, carrying out strict and repeated cycles to verify the performance of hinges and guides. The furniture is loaded with 13 kg of weight while the inside of drawers are filled with weights of up to 11 kg: with this set-up the furniture or wall unit is placed on a test bench where a mechanical arm opens and closes the drawer, as far as the maximum extension, for 10 cycles. In order to test resistance of the wall units instead, we load the furniture with 65 kg of weights and allow it to hang for over a week. Even leafs and doors are subject to testing: we open and close them using a mechanical arm that completes this movement for over 20000 cycles. In addition, we vertically load the leaf or door with 30 kg of weight and open and close them for 10 cycles using the pneumatic arm.
The same way we test furniture, we also test all of its components. It is crucial for us to purchase materials that are guaranteed and tested, but it is also important to conduct tests of both static stability and endurance on the same materials applied to our furniture. We are not content with a generic guarantee of quality, but we require specific controls directly applied to our furniture.
The chrome finish of the handles and the lacquering of our furniture undergo specific tests, both visual, for the elimination of any aesthetic defects as well as for safety. For example, in order to verify corrosion resistance of the chromes handles, we use a saline fog chamber. The parts are closed in an airtight chamber for 250 hours, here saline fog is released by subjecting demineralized water and pure salt to a temperature of 35° C. These tests are conducted cyclically in order to verify the standards over time. Our mirrors are tested by sampling, in order to check the painting and the gluing of the aluminium frame.
